review [CONTAINS MILD SPOILERS]
it's no secret that i love oneshots. i love complex stories compacted into one chapter, eliciting a bittersweet feeling after completion. so, when i stumbled upon a oneshot with the sickest sonic adventure 2-looking cover i've ever seen, i had to revive the bittersweet yearning once again.
the beauty of oneshots comes from its temporal nature. for me, oneshots with open endings are exponentially more enjoyable than ones with set endings. in the case of apple, its humorous & open ending was a real treat -- leaving me craving for more exploration into their world.
apple's story follows a laid back, happy-go-lucky protagonist who's complacent in his lonely & hectic lifestyle. his easygoing disposition is an interesting contrast to the other lead in the story, grimm -- a neurotic 12-year-old genius, maintaining the maturity level of his age group.
most of the story is wholesome, save for the climax. exploring the growth of these two characters is, for lack of a better term, stupid fun. the narrative, albeit incredibly generic, still delivers an engaging experience for readers looking for mindless entertainment.
naoshi komi's humor is evidently (& cleverly) intertwined with the plot. an ultra-powerful teenager who only craves a humble, isolated life is unmatched irony -- making an overall enjoyable reading experience.
the art is solid, though it's quite similar to other manga from the 2010s. the paneling is fine too, nothing special. i could only describe the art as something i might put as my spam's profile picture for an hour. it's not riveting, but it isn't horrible either.
overall, 7/10. fun story, fun characters, just mindless enjoyment.
the weird tendrils that exude from satoshi's body remind me of koro-sensei in chapter 176 lol
