goodbye, eri [tatsuki fujimoto]

yuta ito, a young high schooler, explores unconventional methods of filmmaking. through this, he attempts to come to terms with grief & loss -- meeting eri in the process.

review

fujimoto's works are nothing short of completely jarring. chainsaw man & fire punch are written incredibly poignant & shocking -- a writing style that doesn't spare goodbye, eri.

though i've read plenty of reviews dogging on goodbye, eri's odd & discordant events (similarly to yuta's classmates at the beginning of the manga), i actually found the manga quite amusing to read. i find myself asking why these characters make these odd choices & getting the answers to my musings (albeit a little indirectly) is deeply satisfying.

i also love how yuta grapples with grief through cinematography. to explore loss through the intrigues of cinema -- framing, filming, & dialogue... it's fascinating to read.

i've mentioned paneling in plenty of other reviews, but i'm not too well-versed on the intricacies that go into it. in this work, fujimoto takes a unique approach to paneling, utilizing rectangular panels of 4 to emphasize film. or something.

the imagery in goodbye, eri is absolutely beautiful. the blurs to resemble his camera, the cinematic candids of his environment -- it tells a story in a particularly unique & eye-catching way, along with one of the most beautiful styles i've ever seen.

overall, 9/10. it's not everyone's piece of cake, but i loved it.

pls go read it. ttm me when u finish LMAOOO

here are some of my favorite panels!!!!! [SPOILERS]
