evangelion [yoshiyuki sadamoto]

despite evangelion technically being animanga, i haven't seen the anime adaptation. therefore, i will be labelling this review solely as manga.

shinji has daddy issues. he fights in mechs to gain his approval.

review

i can't stress enough how fantastic of a manga this was. i binge-read the whole thing friday evening to saturday morning -- which is insane, even for an insomniac like me.

shinji was a really fun protagonist. i thought he was utterly pathetic, which made him super realistic to read. if i put any of my parentless friends in a giant robot to get in their father's good graces, they'd be scared shitless too. love him to death, unfortunately.

the dynamic between the characters -- whether romantic, comedic, or angsty -- was written in such a gripping way that completely immersed me into the relationships of evangelion. it's quite compelling to experience the connections nurtured by shinji while simultaneously grappling with the ones he blunders.

misato is an insane character. i loved her so bad until the last few chapters, her actions genuinely startled me. my definite favorite, however, has to be asuka. in the brief glimpses we get into her backstory, we learn a lot about the reasoning behind her actions and personality -- all of which definitely resonated with me. i love her so bad, i get emotional every time i think about her. she's literally my skin on osu right now.

the art of evangelion is fine. the fights between angels and evas were super sick, i really loved the action panels & spreads (though, sadly, i don't have any examples right now).

i really like how kaoru says "penetrate me." i don't really know what to say after that, honestly.

overall, 9.5/10. though i've read a couple negative reviews about it, i actually quite enjoyed it. the plot kept me quite intrigued throughout the whole 90-something chapters churned out by the author. it's also hilarious how they just put biblical imagery in there because "it looked cool" or something.

sidenote

i hear that the anime significantly diverts from the manga's plot, which makes me a little nervous to watch... but i'm sure it's fine, nonetheless.
